Great Plains Memories – Episode 4
From Board Member Clay Evans: Great Plains Memory A native of Boulder, Colorado, I grew up looking west for adventure, toward the mountains. But sometime in my 30s, I began to wonder what lay to the unheralded, little-celebrated east, the Great Plains. My explorations began with driving trips, the first of which took me through […]
GPT Photo of the week: Pawnee Buttes
Northeast Colorado contains some interesting features in the Pawnee National Grassland. They are generally referred to as the Pawnee Buttes and they rise 200-300 feet about the surrounding country. There’s a nice trail leading to them, and they are really cool places to explore.
New Top Ten!
It’s been almost five years since I posted the “Top Ten Places to See on the Great Plains Trail,” and while some things are going to remain the same, a lot has changed as far as routing and highlights are concerned. When I posted that first list, the Great Plains Trail project was in its […]
If Grass Falls . . .
There’s a nice article out this week from the Boulder Weekly about Pawnee National Grassland and the current plight against oil interests. The article is titled, “If Grass Falls in a National Forest, and No One is around to Hear it . . .” and it’s written by Joel Dyer. Here is link to the […]
What Are Your Favorite Great Plains Sites?
2015 – The Year of the Great Plains As I have brazenly declared, 2015 is The Year of the Great Plains, and I’m dedicating this blog all year to providing information for anyone on where to go to enjoy some Great Plains scenery and recreation. I’ve started the year by mentioning some places that are […]
The Great Plains – It’s a National Treasure
The subject came up recently about how many sites of national significance the Great Plains Trail will pass through (in its currently envisioned state, which is subject to variations). For the sake of this blog post, I will consider only National Parks, National Monuments, National Forests, and National Grasslands. This leaves many other important places […]
Hidden Gems
An article has appeared in 5280, The Denver Magazine about some hidden gems in Colorado, and although it did not receive a large write-up, Pawnee Buttes and Pawnee National Grassland got the cover shot, as well as a full two page spread kicking off the larger article. Well done! With more articles like this one, […]
Pawnee and Comanche National Grasslands
Today we feature the two National Grasslands of Colorado – Pawnee in the northeast and Comanche in the southeast. Pawnee National Grassland has two main sections and totals about 200,000 acres. Pawnee NG has been discussed several times on this blog with its main features being two enormous buttes that rise above the surrounding […]
Roadside Attractions
Enough of books and movies for now. Let’s get down to some real Great Plains Trail action! There’s lots more to come, but here are some photos from a recent outing to eastern Colorado and western Nebraska. Enjoy! […]
A Rakish Delight – Part 2
Yesterday (March 30th) was the big day of trail work at Pawnee National Grassland! Thanks to everyone who was involved! The Roosevelt National Forest staff was impressively organized, and the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers provided a lot of extra muscle. The work was hard, but we had a lot of fun and enjoyed some classic wild […]
A Rakish Delight – Part 1
We’re getting our rakes ready for doing some moderate trail work tomorrow at Pawnee National Grassland in northern Colorado! It’s exciting, after a winter of being mostly indoors, to get out and literally get our hands dirty on a trail that we one day hope to have as part of the Great Plains Trail! The […]
Volunteer Time!
Calling all Volunteers! If you live in the eastern half of Colorado (Front Range included), western Nebraska, or southeast Wyoming, the Great Plains Trail Alliance needs your muscle! We will be doing some moderate trail maintenance (moving new gravel with a shovel and rake on an already existing trail) at Pawnee National Grassland in northeast […]
